The machine tool has a cross slide tool holder overhung on the free end of an extension arm which can travel in a horizontal plane along and transverse to the work spindle rotary axis. The extension arm is movable parallel to the rotary axis in an axial bearing of a cross slide. The extension arm (1) is located in a relatively narrow assembly (4a, 4b) in an axial bearing (3a, 3b) provided inside the cross slide (13). The arm is also located via a bracket (9) at its opposite end to the tool holder (2a, 2b) on at least two dowel bolts (12).
