Device for mfr. of cartridges of evacuate writing lead material used in mfr. of writing leads comprises a straining press; a cartridge press, these presses forming an integral structural unit. The cartridge press has an inlet for lead material issuing from the straining press and a compacting cylinder with cartridge piston, the space between the latter and a straining plate defining a vacuum chamber. Both presses are horizontal. In the path of thin strands of lead material issuing at high speed from the straining plate there is a diverting impact plate. The compacting cylinder advances the material intermittently, i.e. stepwise. The discharge end of the cylinder is closable by a sealing plate bearing upon a cover disc. The latter is made of PTFE.
