Oligomers of formula (I): are new and are prepd. by reacting an acrylic acid deriv. CH2=CR1X with a tetraaryl succinic acid dinitrile cpd. of formula (II) at 60-100 degrees C (where Ar is aryl, R1 is alkyl, X is COOR2 or CN, R2 is H or 1-12C alkyl and n is 1-20). (I) are stable to air and light, are soluble in a number of solvents and vinyl monomers and may be used as an initiator for polymerisation and crosslinking, esp. of polyesters. Hardened polymers have low shrinkage. (I) does not bleed out of the polymers and the latter have high Shore hardness and excellent flexural and impact properties.
