The mine support system has a line of units along the coal face, each with a floor member (23) supporting roof members (24, 27) by means of telescopic cylinders (22). The floor member is connected to a face conveyor (13) by an advancing system (12) and the front roof member (27) is adjusted above this conveyor, overhanging it. At the rear is a sloping shield plate (51) which discharges roof material onto another conveyor (17) at the rear. This conveyor is connected by a further advancing system (21). The shield plate is connected by a hinged joint (50) to the rear of the rear roof member (24). The length of the shield plate can be increased telescopically, and its width is the same as that of the whole unit, and it can carry side shielding portions (58).
