The hospital bed with its mattress supporting frame (10) mounted on a base frame (3) travelling on wheels (26), has provision for attaching a table (31) for night time use. The mattress support frame has an end section which can be swung upwards to form an adjustable back support (16). This section can be raised and lowered into or out of use. The table is attached to a sub frame with a lifting mechanism (38) for bringing the table into position. The sub frame is attached to the end of the wheeled frame. This frame includes a forked horizontal arm along which travel rollers carrying the table into the stowed position. At the end positin, the table is swung about a pivot point.
