Rock salt is ground to not 2 mm particle size and added to a neutral brine satd. with NaCl and kept in it for 2-24 hr. then HCl is added to the suspension to a concn. of 0.1-1.0 N, with vigorous agitation, and the suspension is agitated for another 1/2-5 h. The NaCl is then sepd. from the suspension, washed with alkaline brine and dried. A prod. contg. over 99.8 wt.% NaCl is obtd., which is suitable for most technical applications, without the high costs of appts. and energy associated with the 'boiling salt' process.
