Destruction of harmful materials (I) and recovery of wash liquor cpds. in gas scrubbers is effected by passing the liquor (continuously) into a vessel and burning off (I) without environmental pollution, leaving the residue, e.g. Na2O Na2CO3 if NaOH soln. is used, in the vessel, for the prodn. of a fresh NaOH and/or Na2CO3 soln. The equipment used has an oil- or gas-fired furnace with inlet for the liquor, (movable) tanks and guide rails and refractory combustion chambers. Process, which is used in associated with refuse incinerators, allows the waste liquor components to be recycled without the liquor itself, Steam is expelled and (I), such as phenol and/or HCHO, burnt off.
