The strain gauge for aircraft sections, uses a support strip (12) set across the relevant seam and fitted with two strain monitor pads (13, 14), one in each direction. A solid state processing circuit and a programmable control ensure that the distortion of the seam is monitored over the entire strain range. Maximum strains can be programmed into the control, related to the life duration. The system gives prior warning of structural failures, before any damage occurs.
