The system carries out linear ultrasonic examinations, particularly on the moving parts of a patient's body such as heart valves, the foetus of an expectant mother etc., using an ultrasonic converter moved in a straight line in conjunction with a conventional echo scope. A single ultrasonic converter, e.g. a resonance head (1) with lines following at roughly 20 probes per second, is moved in a straight line to and fro over the skin. Where the reflected pulses are picked up for evaluation in an echo scope, the head can be mounted in a slide (2) moved to and fro in relation to the patient by a reciprocating drive.
