The cutting tool (7) executes a curved path, pref. an arc of a circle, and attains a speed at the point of impact which corresponds to the speed of the material (1) to be cut. The active plane of the tool remains at right angles to the material's longitudinal direction. The tool, pref. a circular saw (7, 8) is mounted on a rotatable arm (6) whose drive is controlled by the speed of advancement of the material so that the tool always meets and cuts the material at the correct position for the required length. The arm has two limbs (6, 10) joined by a coupling web (12).
