A separator with integral cooling means for separating hot char pellets from a mixture of the char pellets and particulate heat exchange medium, e.g. sand, includes an apertured cylindrical screening element mounted for rotation about an inclined axis with a cooling means located at an outlet end of the screening element. The hot char and sand mixture is introduced through an inlet into the screening element and is tumbled therein by the rotating screening element. The sand particles are screened through the apertures of the screening element to a sand outlet, while the char pellets fall from an outlet of the screening element through a cooling water spray. The separator of the present invention provides a means to separate and cool char pellets which may be readily sealed to provide an inert separating atmosphere and thermally insulated to conserve heat.
