Each input signal Xi in a stream of signals has the previous output signal Yi-1 and a trend signal DELTA Yi subtracted from it to give a normalized signal Zi representing how far Xi differs from the expected value. Zi passes through a soft limiter 16, which limits it to the range +/- LIM, and the soft limiter output is added to the previous output signal and the trend signal in adder 19 to give the output signal Yi. Thus most signals pass through unchanged, but deviant signals are detected and replaced by values at the edge of the permitted band. A trend calculator 27 determines the general trend or slope of the signals, and a limit calculator 31-36 determines the width of the permitted band in dependence on the general scatter or variability of the signals.
