Automatic focussing mechanism for a camera measures the subject distance and produces a proportional signal. This signal is used to adjust the lens until a signal produced by the focussing setting of the lens matches the distance signal. The lens is equipped with a start reference (127b) and a sensor (115) which indicates the setting of the focus. These signals are compared with those received from the subject through a rangefinder system.
