1347426 Olefin polymer blends DART INDUSTRIES Inc 15 May 1972 [26 May 1971] 22738/72 Heading C3P Blends comprise (1) a C 2-10 olefin polymer and (2) a modified C 2-10 olefin polymer obtained by reaction in the presence of an organic peroxide with at least one polymerizable compound (a) wherein RSP1/SP is C 1-20 alkylene or cycloalkylene; wherein RSP6/SP is C 1-10 alkylene, O, S, NH, SO 2 or where RSP7/SP is H or C 1-10 alkyl and RSP8/SP is alkyl; -(RSP9/SPXRSP9/SP)pwhere RSP9/SP is C 1-10 alkylene, X is -NH-, O or S and p is 1 to 20; wherein Y is O or S, RSP10/SP is C 1-10 alkylene, SO 2 , O, S or where RSP11/SP is H or C 1-10 alkyl and RSP12/SP is C 1-10 alkyl, and n is 1 to 20; wherein RSP13/SP is C 1-10 alkylene, is 1 to 10 and z is 1 to 10; -CH 2 [ORSP14/SP] r - where RSP14/SP is C 1-10 alkylene and r is 1 to 100; or where s is 1 to 100; and RSP2/SP is H or CH 3 ; or (b) CH 2 =CRSP3/SP(RSP4/SP) r Si(RSP5/SP) 3 where RSP3/SP is H or C 1-4 alkyl; RSP4/SP is C 1-10 alkylene or cycloalkylene, or a substituted or unsubstituted phenylene group, -COO- group, -(C 1-10 alkylene)- COO- group, -COO(C 1-10 alkylene)- group or -(C 1-10 alkylene)COO(C 1-10 alkylene)- group, with or without pendant glycidoxy groups, and t is 0 or 1; and RSP5/SP is halogen, C 1-10 alkoxy or C 1-10 acyloxy. The olefin polymer may be polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutene-1, poly-4-methylpentene-1 or an ethylene/propylene or ethylene/propylene/butene-1 copolymer. The organic peroxide may be liquid or dissolved in an inert carrier, and the reaction may be effected in the presence of xylene or a diol or triol acrylate for melt flow control. The compositions may also contain conventional stabilizers, flame retardants and fillers, particularly glass fibres. Many suitable reactants and ingredients are specified and examples describe glass fibre reinforced compositions of polypropylene and (1, 2 and 8) polypropylene modified with glycidyl acrylate, (3) propylene/ ethylene block copolymer modified with glycidyl acrylate, (5) polypropylene modified with γ-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxy silane, (6) polypropylene modified with glycidyl acrylate and xylene and (7) polypropylene modified with glycidyl acrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate; and of propylene/ethylene block copolymer and (4) polypropylene modified with glycidyl acrylate.
