The ship motion measuring instrument has two water flow impeller transducers. One transducer wheel (90) measures the longitudinal water velocity and the other the lateral water velocity. Each transducer wheel (91) drives a permanent magnet whose rotation is detected by a coil. Each coil is connected to a receiver motor which is synchronised with the wheel of the transducer. Each motor drives a counter which gives a count which is a measure of the displacement of the ship in either the longitudinal or lateral direction. The instrument can easily be removed from inside the ship and replaced by a plug (79).
