The sepn. of Ni and Co is effected by (a) extracting an aq. soln. contg. Ni and Co principally as their sulphates, with an organic extraction medium capable of dissolving Ni and Co by replacement of its H atoms by Ni and Co; (b) stripping the extract with conc. HCl to form an aq. phase contg. Ni in a concn. of 100 g/l; and (c) extracting the resulting aq. soln. of NiCl2 and CoCl2 with an extraction medium to separate the NiCl2 from the CoCl2. The process can be used in the isolation of Ni and Co from ores contg. both, e.g. sulphide ores, arsenopyrite and speisses. High recovery yields are obtd. (e.g. 98.3/99.25% for Ni 97.8/98.5% for Co) and sepn. of the Ni and Co is practically complete (e.g. 99.9% purities).
