A spot welding piston for an industrial robot comprising two jaws, the front ends of the jaws moving to clamp workpieces under pressure between the welding electrodes fixed to the front end of each jaw. The novelty lies in the use of a lever mechanism using at least two link rods actuated by the piston in a cylinder housed in the wrist on the robot, the movement of the piston causing the jaws to open and close. The clamping mechanism pref. includes means permitting the jaws to be displaced so they match the position of the workpieces, thus providing a constant clamping pressure. The device is small and of low wt., thus permitting high welding speeds.
