The engine (1) is connected to the starting flywheel (2). The starting wheel has a cord which is connected at its end (8) to a fixed point on the vehicle. The cord passes over a return pulley (7). A pedal (6) is carried on a sliding frame (4) which is allowed to slide in tracks on the vehicle frame (5). Driving the pedal (6) forward starts the engine when it is de-clutched. If the engine should fail the clutch may be engaged and the vehicle moved by a number of applications of the pedal (6). Various other mechanical arrangements with different mechanical advantages are described.
