Flame resistant chipboard - mfd. by spraying chips with boron cpd.-acid, drying, adding resin binder, and pressing-heating

Chipboard and similar wood-based prods. are produced by (a) spraying the wood particles with an aqs. soln. of a boron cpd. (I) and a sulphur-contg. acid (II); (b) conditioning the particles; (c) drying; (d) adding a resin binder (III) to the particles; and (e) combining the particles to form the prod. at an elevated temp./pressure. (I) is pref. borax (Na2B4O7.xH2O; where x = 0-10). (II) is pref. H2SO4 and (III) is pref. a urea/formaldehyde resin system. Flame resistant materials of uniform quality are obtd. as the resin is not mixed with the boron cpd.; it has a better stability and more effective action. The boron cpd.-resin mixing phase is avoided.
