Hydrophilic properties, esp. the water vapour absorption, of porous synthetic polymer sheets, esp. synthetic leathers for use in garments and footwear, are increased by adding to the raw material mixt. a hydrophilic component (I), consisting of (a) oppositely charged ionic polymers, (b) a mixt. of oppositely charged ionic polymers and monomers, or (c) a mixt. of oppositely charged monomers, and converting (I) into its water insoluble form before, during or after the formation of the sheet, by polyreactions. Enables the water vapour absorption of the sheets to be controlled at a desired value. A hydrophilic gradient can be formed over the cross section of the sheet. The prods. provide garments and footwear with a satisfactory moisture permeability.
