Butt welding followed by heat-treatment of the weld - using machine suitable for joining steel wires prior to drawing

Semi-automatic machine, for the welding and heat-treatment of but welds, has two welding clamps, each mounted on a slide which is mobile longitudinally and connected to the sec. of a transformer of which the prim. can be successively fed directly from a current source and via an adjustable resistor, a control circuit being employed to provide the welding current followed by the heating current which travels through the resistor; means are also provided so that when the welding phase is complete and the heat-treatment phase commences, an electric motor can be used to move the slides away from each other. Used. esp. for high-carbon steel, stainless steel such as F17, or austenitic- or martensitic- steels, e.g. to weld the ends of wire together to avoid the necessity of threading each wire through a bank of drawing dies for wire-drawing. Produces the required metallurgical structure at the welded joint.
