Rail car for the transport of hot coke from one point to another, comprising a chassis supporting an oven charge-holder, a number of undercarriages provided with wheels and with support frames pivotable with respect to the chassis round a central vertical shaft, =2 electric traction motors providing a driving force to at least the front undercarriage which is installed at the position of max. wt. of the rail car, and control units which deliver forward and reverse couples via the motors. The problem of tractive force is reduced by combining the locomotive usually used with the coke quench and transport car, and direct motor braking can be used instead of mechanical braking.
