The static frequency converter uses natural switching and is designed so that the input reactive current may be controlled independently of the output current phase and amplitude. The design is aimed particularly at improving the power factor in machine and arc furnace applications. The three phase thyristor based system is controlled from a signal generator detecting the state of the input and generating a signal as a function of this state. A circuit providing the control itself responds to the input from the pulse generator and controls the firing of the thyristor groups such that the circulating current amplitude maintains a phase retard of the input in quadrative current relative to some required value.
