A pneumatically actuated retrieval mechanism (16) has a suction head (20) to enable a single list to be extracted from the file stack (14) mounted on the cabinet. When extracted and located in the vertical position, the card is allowed to fall into the reading station (28). The card is supported between guide rails (34) and two cursors are mounted on slideways on the front surface. The data in a specific column is readily located with the aid of one or other of the cursors and the possibility of error reduced. A cylinder actuated unit (86) allows the reading head to be rotated through 180 deg. to permit the card to be removed.
