A connector for straight, elbow, or tee joints between standard diameter bars or pipes, for example carrying water or electricity cables, is in the form of a sleeve (1) with a stepped diameter bore symmetrically disposed about the centre and of decreasing diameter towards the centre. Each bore is of such a diameter that it matches one of a range of existing bar or pipe sizes and the steps (3, 5) between bores form abutments for the pipe ends. Fixing of the pipe ends is by any of the conventional methods, such as bonding, sweating or screwing. The bores will normally be circular in cross section but other sections such as hexagonal are possible. Expanding or contracting joints are easily achieved. Pipes fitting the minimum bore may butt against each other or an additional shoulder may be provided, particularly when only one of the pipes is of the minimum bore size.
