A fuel oil economiser for the burner of a boiler has a damper flap pivotal in the flue about a horizontal axis and carried in bearings at each side of the flue. The flap is connected at one end to a pinion which engages a rack. The pressurised fuel oil from a pump is supplied through an inlet and applies pressure to a piston which moves towards an adjustable stop. The piston is connected to the rack which meshes and is returned to its original position by the action of two coil springs. The flap closes the flue when the burner is not operating, but opens when the fuel oil pump is started.
