The auxiliary heating system for a central heating installation, which ensures that the water will still be heated in the event of a breakdown in the main heater, thus preventing the water from freezing inside the pipes when the temperature falls below zero in winter time, employs a muff type heater which is clamped around one of the water circulating pipes located near a mixer valve (V) and controlled by a thermostat (t) attached to the pipe nearby. Instead of a refractory muff type heater, an electric transformer may be used, with its secondary coil connected to the pipe so as to heat the water passing through it, under control of the thermostat.
