Gallium prodn from sodium aluminate solns - using liq.-liq. extn with organic phase contg a substd hydroxy-quinoline

Process for winning gallium from aq. solns., esp. from sodium aluminate solns. arising in the Bayer process, by liq.-liq. extn. using an organic phase. The novelty is that conc., strongly basic, aq. solns. are used and the extn. carried out with an organic phase comprising a water-insol. hydroxy-quinoline with a min. of 8 carbon atoms in substituted groups, plus an aliphatic and/or aromatic hydrocarbon which maybe halogenated if required. The organic phase may also contain a cpd. with an alcohol radical or other cpd assisting soln. The pref. organic phase contains 10% of 7-(5',5',7',7'-tetramethyl-1'-octene-3-yl)-8-hydroxyquinoline(cpd- . I), and is used below 100 degrees C., esp. 50-80 degrees C. The Ga can be removed without altering the aluminate soln.
