The wad is for fitting between the charge of powder and the lead shot in a hunting gun cartridge, having a female cup in which a male one is fitted, the open portions of the cups being towards each other so as to form between them a sealed gas-filled chamber. The wall forming the base of the female one is in contact with the powder on the outside, and that of the male one with the shot. The walls forming the cup bases (4, 5) are cambered outwards so as to give an appreciable volume to the gas-filled chamber, compressed on firing by the walls cambering inwards. The male one slides in the female one until it strikes it along the edges. An annular lip (6) round the outside of the female cup prevents increase in chamber pressure damaging the wad or gas escaping.
