The pipe tapping joint comprises a union nut (2), which is counterbored to house an 0-ring seal (11) and compression ring (13). The nut screws into a housing (1) and this forces the compression ring into the counterbore. Since the diameter of the latter reduces with depth and the compression ring has a matching shape, the ring is compressed radially on to the pipe (4) at the same time as it compresses the ring seal (11) into the nut. A small anular lip (13b) projects from the internal edge of the compression ring and locates the latter firmly by deforming the outer surface of the pipe. Compression of the ring is assisted by forming longitudinal slots (70, 74) in its surface.
