A pick up chain discharges the sugar beet (4) onto the cleaner and an elevator chain (5) carries the sugar beet to a collector bin. A cleaner shaft (10) at an angle to the vertical carries a slightly conical plate (8) with radial teeth (9). The tilting conical rotor is enclosed by an outer peripheral grille formed of two fixed peripheral grille sections with parallel bars. The turbine is also enclosed by a fixed peripheral grille section and by a fixed peripheral grille section. Above the central part of the conical turbine is a fixed inside grille formed of a number of vertical bars. The top (16) of the bars are curved outwards to go under the pick-up chain (3).
