An air permeable chemically inert valve for insertion into the ear passage consists of a chemically inert tube (12) with a central section (14) around which the ear passage forms a seal and an aperture at each end. A second inert section (20) cuts off the cross-section of the tube channel (12). It prevents passage of solid or liquid material, but permits the passage of gases in and out of the middle ear. This system allow equalisation of pressure between the outer and middle ear sections.
