Prodn. of allyl ethers (I) of (halo)phenols (II), comprises reacting (II), dissolved or suspended in methanol, with an alkyl halide (III) in presence of an alkali(ne earth) (bi)carbonate as base and with 0.5-10 wt. % water (on methanol) added to the mixt. Pref. the base is Na2CO3 and is used at 0.5-0.6 moles per mole phenolic OH. (I) derived from halophenols are flameproofing agents for plastics. They are also intermediates, by addn. of halogens or H halides, for more highly halogenated derivs. The solvent can be reused repeatedly. Addn. of water also makes the reaction safer since very dry methanol can delay the reaction causing a dangerous evolution of CO2 once the reaction does start.
