Prepn. of azines of formula (I) R1R2C=N-N-CR1R2 (I) (where R1 and R2 are independently H, 1-12C linear alkyl, 3-12C branched alkyl ro cycloalkyl, 6-12C hydrocarbon radical contg. a benzene nucleus or together R1 and R2 form a 3-11C opt. branched alkylene, the radicals being opt. substd. by gps. stable in the reaction medium, e.g. Cl, Br, F, nitro or methoxy), comprises reacting NH3 and H2O2 with a carbony deriv. R1-CO-R2, in the presence of a catalyst able to be generated in situ. The catalyst is pref. ammonium carbonate, bicarbonate, or sesquicarbonte formed from CO2 gas and NH3.
