Linear aromatic polyester prodn. - from (4,4')-dihydroxy-diphenyl sulphone dicarbonate and aromatic acid, by polycondensation in melt

Linear polyarylates contg. sulphone gps. are prepd. by condensing (a) dicarbonates of 4,4'-dihydroxy-diphenyl sulphone and/or their oligomers, ept. mixed with (b) dicarbonates. of other bisphenols, with (c) aromatic dicarboxylic acids, in absence of a solvent. The polymers have good mechanical properties and improved resistance to solvents and chemicals. They are prepd. from cheap, easily available bisphenol sulphone derivs. The polymers can be used in mfr. of building materials, sheets, fibres, foams, insulating varnishes, glues and coating compsns. Pref. dicarbonates (a) are of formula (I) where R1 and R2 are 1-4C alkyl, pref. (m)ethyl and n=1-10 (1-8).
