The engine has a main combustion chamber (5) above a piston (2) in a cylinder (3). A swirl chamber (7) communicates with the main chamber by a passage (6) and contains the fuel injector (8). The passage (6) between swirl chamber and main chamber is controlled by a poppet valve (11) which is closed by a spring (13) and opened by a rocker arm (14) driven from a cam (16) on the engine camshaft (17). This valve is timed so that it is closed until nearly the end of the compression stroke. When it opens air which is already compressed streams into the swirl chamber producing a shock wave which raises its temperature. This makes it possible for the engine to have a lower compression ratio.
