DC motor system with double homopolar stator - operates without inverting commutator and utilises full motor current power using rotor with four poles and radial fields
A d.c. motor has a double homopolar stator, the design differing from the normal type of machine in that an inverting commutator system is not required. The design is also applicable to dynamos. The basic motor has as stator poles two poles(1, 2) of like sense, ie both North or both South. The rotor has four electromagnets or permanent magnets set in quadrature in the rotor such that their fields are radial. The power acting on the two rotor halves resulting from the motor current is the total power as opposed to the half power of the orthodox type of machine.
