Surface type heat exchanger - has fins cast in rigid sole plate with embedded depth greater than fin thickness

The surface type heat exchanger has parallel closely spaced fins (1) projecting from a sole plate (4). The fins and the sole plate are respectively of aluminium sheet and aluminium alloy, and the fins are cast into the sole plate. The assembly is made in a foundry and by pouring molten aluminium alloy into a recessed sole plate. The fins project in on one major face, and as a result the outer sectors of the fin are simply embedded and the inner sectors are fused with the sole plate. The depth of fin embedded may be not less than the fin thickness and the fused depth may depend on the relative thermoconductive properties of the constituent material of the fin and the sole plate.
