The multi-purpose surgical instrument can be used as dissecting scissors, or as a scalpel. It comprises a pair of arms (1, 2) linked by a pivot (12) at the front, jaws being at an angle to the arms to provide clearance for side use. Curved springs (10, 11) at the rear provide opening bias. The upper arm carries a sliding piece (3). The front of this piece is fitted with a replaceable scalpel blade (4) and this is pushed into a forwards position when the instrument is used as a scalpel. In this position, the scissors are shut and a catch (5) holds both arms closed (14, 15).
