Rotating disc extraction column - having baffle plates with disc in opening and baffled disengagement zones between extraction zones

Mass transfer extraction column for liquid extraction operations has agitator discs mounted on a rotor shaft. Extraction chambers are formed by trays across the column, each of these having a circular opening. The rotating disc fits into this. The trays can have several such openings, each having a dia. of 0.2 - 0.6 of the column dia. The clearance between the rotor and the trays is 0.005-0.05 of the disc dia. The discs themselves can have openings, the total surface being 0.1-0.5 of the disc. surface. Used with liquid extraction processes esp. where there are problems of dispersion. The column described gives intensive mixing between the phases in each stage without back mixing.
