Rotor of axial flow steam turbine - has shroud ring round blade tips with slots to give tangential elasticity

The rotor of an axial flow turbine has blades (2) projecting radially in a ring round the wheel. A shroud ring (1) runs round the outer tips of the blades and links them all together. It is made as a single annular ring. The shroud ring has slots (3, 4) cut, which are alternately axial slots (3) in the centre of the ring and pairs of diagonal slots (4) sloping towards the centre of the ring from the front and back of the ring. This construction of the ring provides stiffening to the blades with sufficient tangential elasticity to withstand the forces due to uneven steam loading. This is liable to arise on the inlet row of a nozzle controlled turbine.
