Superimposed rows of battery cages for hens are each provided with a floor which can be pivoted about its front edge. A deflector (10) at the rear of the cage is pivoted to the floor and slides in vertical guides in members (5). A shaft (1) carried in bearings(4) has two cables connected to it from the floor of each cage in a row of cages. One end of the shaft is direct coupled to the output of a redn. gearbox driven by a motor according to a predetermined programme. The floor of the cage is covered with a sheet of rubber. At intervals the rear edges of the floor are very slowly raised to allow eggs to roll forward to a gulley from which they can be collected. The floor is then lowered ready for the next cycle.
