Two=stage inertia welding of anode assembly for X=ray target - involves high spindle speed for heating prior to welding of molybdenum (alloy) stem to niobium (alloy) disc
Two=stage inertia welding of anode assembly for X=ray target - involves high spindle speed for heating prior to welding of molybdenum (alloy) stem to niobium (alloy) disc
A steam made of Mo or Mo-based alloys is affixed to a disc made of Nb or Nb-based alloys by firstly preheating the disc in the range 200 degrees to 400 degrees C. The stem and disc are placed in an inertie welding appts. and subjected to a flywheel movement of inertia of from 9 lb ft2 to 19 lb ft2, an axial pressure of from 35,000 to 50,000 p.s.i. and a spindle speed of from 1400 to 2800 r.p.m. to form a weld joint. An X-ray target is formed on the surface of the disc. Used as anode assembly for a rotating X-ray anode tube. A two-step inertia welding process may be used which eliminates the need to preheat the disc separately.
