Procaine derivs. of formula (I) are new: In (I) R is ethyl, propyl, butyl, pentyl or -CH2CH2-(sic) and X is halogen, esp. Br. (I) have greater activity as local anaesthetic than procaine base, and the cpds. also have muscle relaxing and bactericidal activity. (I) are prepd. by treating procaine base with 400-1000% excess of the desired normal alkyl halide and refluxing the mixt. until quaternisation is complete.
