The radar system includes a radio frequency pulse transmitter (202) and two receivers (208, 219). The first receiver responds to echo signals and includes two phase detectors (209, 210) which provide an in-phase received component and a quadrature received component. The second responds to samples of radio frequency energy and includes two phase detectors (220, 221) providing an in phase transmitted component and a quadrature signal component. An analogue-to-digital converter (213) digitises the two quadrature and in-phase components, and a stabilisation unit (214) generates compensated phase detector signals. The unit includes a digital computer for evaluating given relationships between the phase detector signals and the in-phase and quadrature components.
