Nut locking system - uses lock-nut with left-hand thread which screws onto bolt with double thread

The nut locking system uses a combined right-hand and left-hand thread (3, 4) on the shank (2) of the bolt. A nut (1) with a right-hand thread is first screwed onto the shank (2) and tightened to the required torque. The lock-nut (6), which has a left-hand thread, has axial projections (11) at each corner of its hexagonal form. When this lock-nut is screwed onto the double threaded portion (4) of the shank (2), the projections (11) grip the tapered boss (9) of the right-hand nut (1) so that any tendency for it to become loose tightens the lock-nut (6).
