A rotary internal combustion engine has a cylindrical casing with a single elliptical rotor. The rotor has a sealing strip at each end of its major axis. Two diametrically opposite vanes slide radially and their inner ends abut against the surface of the rotor so that the casing is divided into four compartments of continuously changing volume. As the rotor rotates a mixture of air and fuel is drawn into the casing, and compressed, ignited, expanded and then expelled.
