A crane used for lifting containers uses a cross shaped spreader, with bolts at each extremity which engage sockets in the container. The bolts are actuated hydraulically by electromagnetic valves operated by means of a battery carried by the spreader which also incorporates the hydraulic system. The hydraulic system consists of a reciprocating pump which is driven by the rotation of the pulley of the lifting block when the crane is operating. The pump delivers fluid to an hydraulic accumulator which supplies fluid to the hydraulic cylinder for actuating the bolts.
