Foam fire extinguishing concentrate contains water, fluorinated surfactant (I) and hydrocarbon surfactant, (I) consisting of a mixt. of cpds. of the formula Rf(CF=CH)m-(CH2)p - circled positive NR1R2-Q-X (in which (IA) X is -OH A circled negative and (IB) X is -OSO3 circled negative, Rf is R-16, pref. 5-12C perfluoroalkyl; m = 0 or 1; p = 1, 2, 3 or 4; R1 and R2 are 1-4 C alkyl, cyclohexyl or 2-6 C 2-hydroxyalkyl and R1 can also be H Q is 2-4 C alkylene, opt. substd. by phenyl gps; and A circled negative is a water-solubilising anion, pref. MeSO4 circled negative). In the presence of water, these compsns, spread on apolar combustible liquids and form a film of water, which covers the surface and provides some protection against flash back.
