A fibre-forming, melt spinnable copolyester capable of forming an anisotropic melt comprises units of formula (I), (II) and -(O-Ar-O)- (III), (where Ar is chloro-, methyl-, 2,6-dichloro-, or 2,6-dimethyl-1, 4-phenylene, or chloro-4, 4'-biphenylene). These are approx. equimolar amts. of units (II) and (III) and 15-70 wt. % of units (I). Fibres formed from the polymer exhibit low shrinkage when heated to 160 degrees C, high orientation, and high initial modulus. They can be used for fabrics, papers, ropes, fibre reinforced plastics, etc.
